Why Syrian Kurds Want Federalism

Many Syrian Kurds view federalism as the legitimate model best suited to their country’s future, although Ankara and Damascus, for their part, have balked at one word in the declaration: federalism. In the modern Middle East, only one federal state (Iraq) has allowed Kurds to exercise their collective rights and freedoms and refrained from violent repression against Kurdish civilians. Unitary states (Turkey, Iran, and Syria) have denied these basic rights to their Kurdish citizens and carried out violent reprisals to punish Kurdish civilians.
