Syria: federalism, decentralization, autonomy, where is the difference?

Federal states like Spain, Great Britain, Iraq, Germany, and Belgium, which grant broad autonomy to the regions or communities living within their territory, act as a bulwark against separatist tendencies and foreign interference. Coexistence between communities is strengthened, not weakened. Separatist tendencies were more prevalent in centralized dictatorships than in states that grant broad autonomy to their people and regions. Federalization or autonomy, or even decentralization or regionalization: it all amounts to the same thing. What may differ is the number and degree of powers of the central state that are decentralized.
