Rekindled hope for federalism in West Africa with the AES
Sixty-five years later, history seems to be offering the Sahel countries a second chance. Modibo Keita’s dream is being repeated once again, in part, through the formation of the Confederation of Sahel States, formed by Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. Although a federation is eventually envisaged, the leaders of these three states have preferred to adopt a gradual approach, starting with a confederation, in order to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past.
