Louise Weiss Academy: Federalism, feminism, and pacifism in the face of imperialism and nationalism
From July 2nd to 5th, 2026, the Louise Weiss Academy, an international summer school dedicated to the study of peace and federalism, was held for the second time at the Château des Rohan. This event is named after a woman whose legacy continues to influence European thought today: Louise Weiss. Known as the grandmother of Europe , she embodies a rare political commitment: European integration, the defense of peace, and the emancipation of women. A committed journalist, founder of the ” New Europe” movement , and activist for women’s suffrage, among other causes, she saw the union of European peoples as a bulwark against barbarism. Her legacy resonated with this Academy, which emphasized that federalism, peace, and feminism are essential political responses to confront the resurgence of imperialism and nationalism that threaten the European project.
