New Caledonian institutions must be a source of reflection for the evolution of the French political system
Hello everyone,
This week, the association is coming back to you to share with you two articles published in 2018 on New Caledonia by Bastien Vandendyck , current chief of staff of the current president of the Southern Province.
In these articles, we can read that:
– New Caledonia is a “federal” exception within the one and indivisible French Republic,
– New Caledonia has such a decentralized political system that it evokes a federalism that does not say its name,
– New Caledonia is in a quasi-federal situation within an indivisible republic due to the fact that France has delegated a substantial part of its sovereignty to local institutions,
– the situation of the territory arouses the interest of other French territories such as French Polynesia, the communities of the Antilles and Corsica among others,
– where the French presence is contested, the New Caledonian example is a source of inspiration for smoothing out political differences, particularly when they originate in a history of conflict with the metropolis,
– the transposition of this model establishes the idea of a federalization of certain French territories . A development which requires a deep reflection on the very nature of the Republic .
The author added that New Caledonian institutions must be a source of reflection for the evolution of the French political system.
