Swiss federalism: its origins and its perception by the population

Federalism is one of the pillars of the Swiss political system. Switzerland is a quadrilingual country that defines itself as a nation born of political will, as opposed to states characterized by a single culture or ethnicity. Switzerland was born from a web of alliances between cantons, cities, and rural communities. The Latin term “foedus” means “pact, alliance.” While conservatives did not want a state, the federal form was adopted. Federalism is still valued by the Swiss population today.
