
The Basic Law is 75 years old – A celebration for democracy
The Basic Law has formed the basis for living together in Germany since 23 May 1949. It is a success story: 75 years of freedom, peace and democracy in Germany.
Article 20 sets out the principles governing the structure of the state and begins with the words: “The Federal Republic of Germany is a democratic and social federal state.”
The 146 articles of the Basic Law also contain, among other things, general provisions concerning the Federation and the Länder , as well as regulations relating to the various constitutional bodies such as the Federal Government and the Bundestag , legislation, national administration, case law and finances.
