Article from Les Echos

Hello everyone,

The APROFED association is returning to you in these dark days to relay an article from Les Echos dated May 17, 2024, relating to the vision of neighboring Pacific countries on the current situation in New Caledonia.

While the Pacific Islands Forum, which has nearly twenty member states, says it is concerned about the situation in the territory and calls for a return to calm and dialogue, we also learn that:

– New Caledonia is seen as an anomaly by most Pacific island nations which are themselves autonomous sovereign territories, particularly by Australians who find it difficult to understand that decisions are taken for the Caledonian population, in France, at Matignon,

– France, in their eyes, still wants to rule New Caledonia,

– Australia and the United States tolerate French colonialism to the extent that France acts as a counterweight to growing Chinese influence, thus demonstrating, in our opinion, that there is nothing to be expected from these two countries for any development in New Caledonia, pushing it de facto towards their opponents, namely Russia and China. The current situation with Azerbaijan is proof of this.
